What to wear to a Job Interview?

These past couple of days I've had job interviews lined up, hence why I haven't posted any outfit pictures, but then I thought to myself maybe I should post what I wear so I can get some tips!  Maybe what I wear is not professional enough, or not satisfactory, so I thought I would share what I wore the past two days to see if any of you could help me out, and maybe those of you who are in a similar predicament as me could indulge in the same advice.

On Thursday I went to a "business" office and I actually had my hair up but I took these pictures at night time afterward so excuse the strange atmosphere and lack of feeling (I was sleepy and really really full from dinner on Friday).
Old Navy gray trousers, white shirt, Theory blazer, cream kitten heels

Friday I went to an interview at a bank and I left my hair down (didn't care) which turned out to be a good idea because the office environment (not the counter, but the corporate building) was business casual.

So what do you think? What do/did you wear for your job interview?

The Shopaholic's Arch Enemy is Advertising?

Did I mention that I no longer subscribe to fashion magazines? At various times I have received Demi, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Harper's Bazaar...and every now and then I sign up for free issues, which they, of course, remember in their system and continue to send me regularly.  Yobo asked me the other day as he browsed through another free issue of Harper's Bazaar whether I feel bad when I browse itWhy?, you may ask as I did, and he answered: because you'll want everything in it.

It's true. I do. I don't even use Polyvore much because everything I like is in the triple to quadruple digits price range. I stopped subscribing to Harper's Bazaar because I felt it was too much like Vogue, where everything is luxuriously expensive (for me). Then I realized I should just stop browsing in general, and I even stepped away from all those blogs promoting the latest products (even though I do this sometimes...),  with reviews of the latest products, or just telling you what to buy this season.  I unsubscribed to most of them, and now I read blogs with real content, or the occasional review, because personally I find reading/writing reviews a little bit boring (unless of course I'm interested in finding out about the product, or it's something new and exciting, which would be why I subscribe to the blogs I do read). For example, I've had a Makeupalley account for at least a year now but I've written maybe two one reviews...? I don't even use it to check on products often...I guess I just prefer seeing for myself in the store or wasting money on it. >P
I've also unsubscribed for all those irresistible offers I keep getting by email, whether Neiman Marcus (outlet) or Gilt. Of course some of them slipped through the cracks and I still get them (and then there's that email that I haven't checked in a month or so), but I have learned to delete them without opening them too often. But yes, I still receive Sephora offers, Victoria's Secret offers (because of the credit card), and Vichy offers. Other than that, all gone. Amazing considering I'm a member for several sites similar to Gilt, but honestly it was a waste of time to browse them. I'm not patient enough to stalk for the sale to "begin", just as I'm not motivated enough to get up early and line up so I can catfight for a cheap deal.

Overall, I guess what I'm trying to point out is that if you're spending is out of control, then take control of it! Perhaps you cannot stop watching TV and avoiding TV ads (as I do by watching online), perhaps you do like browsing sales (I do too!), perhaps you enjoy knowing when your offers are, or going to the store and browsing slowly...But if you think you are a shopaholic then starting limiting your intake of advertisements somewhere. We can't help that they're all over the streets (unless we're hermits) but I think we should have control over our lives in terms of exposure.

So that was my two cents of the day. Got something to share?

[P.S. I'm going to end my giveaways soon, so if you haven't participated already, or you know a lot of people--help me get enough to entries! Thankee~]

The sun is a sham when you're tormented by gales.

Today, much like the last few days, I always wake up cold.  Our house evidently doesn't warm up till the afternoon, and even then it's not exactly hot (I'm always wearing a sweatshirt). This means I have no idea what the temperature outside is (I need a thermometer) and I don't have time to check my netbook the way I used to check my desktop (after leaving it on all night).  So yesterday and the day before I thought it was hot because it was sunny but it turned out to be really windy and cold. I almost got a flu on Monday because our campus is on a hill and it's really really windy and I have classes in the science colleges which always have their ac booming on high (we in the liberal arts building like to keep it moderate, maybe we're more eco-conscious?)
F21 navy jacket; Aeropostale striped knit sweater in pink & gray; Old Navy tank top; Joe's Jeans cropped jeans; jazz shoes

...So don't laugh at my three-layer outfit. Honestly I didn't wear the jacket most of the time so it wasn't that bad. I just wanted to see how it would feel to wear these cropped jeans without boots. Oh, and the way I recycle pieces for outfits is kind of random. Where we used to live I would hang clothes that didnt need washing up so I'd know that I've worn them already and should wear them again so I can wash them, and this would also prevent outfit-repeating, but now I haven't worked out a system yet. I really should. I've read about bloggers with all sort of systems, what with hanging clothes and moving them (doesn't work for me, yobo hangs his clothes all over the place (if at all) and prevents any sense of order). How do you prevent outfit repeats?

Recommended: Face masks from China

I thought I had taken these pictures before but I can't find them anywhere, I'm actually missing a few "colors" and masks as we're slowly running out (waiting for a package from my mother-in-law XD). Besides these I also have a "box" of Japanese face masks (in blue):
Over the years I have used the individual packs by Kose as well, but they are overpriced and not that great. I really prefer Korean masks, my aunt had given me bird's nest masks three years ago that I still find far superior to anything I use today, but when I went to China in 2008 I picked out a lot of different types of masks in the supermarket and having tested them decided on these:
The big ones (silver) are my favorite as they're not "too big" (like some Korean ones are on my face) but not too small (I find some Japanese brands too small for my face).  There's a lot of extra "juice", which already makes it better than Kose's masks. Normally we have this brand in 3-4 types (everything except anti-aging), but now we evidently only have Rose and Lemon left. I tried looking online but didn't find them anywhere, so if you ever see these--try them!

The second brand I think I've only used once, it was not as good and has a medicinal smell to it.  Yobo always gets these "Chinese herbal" masks for eye and face because they come highly recommended, but I like to leave my masks on for as long as I can tolerate them (or until they dry) and I don't want to have to smell like Salompas for half an hour or more.

Near the 99 Ranch market there's a really big cosmetic store (I should show you?) with Korean masks that I sometimes get. I think I'll get them next time and show you. They come in big packs and individual packs, but with ziplock so they remain fresh and juicy! What type of mask do you use?

Forever 21: May Picks

My coworker was browsing Forever 21's latest and I haven't been there in a while so I got excited!

Dotted Dress is really cute! I wonder how long/short it would be on me!

Floral skirt is more my style (not colorful or too cute) but then it's also a little gypsy so I don't know...

I don't know, could I pull off this Rose Skirt?

I really like this Pleated Tulip Skirt. I like how it accentuates your hips and gives the impression that you have wider hips than you do.

I would be all over this Chiffon Skirt if it weren't so sheen...And not machine-washable.

This Layered Sweetheart Dress is really cute...*-*

Rosette Top looks a little...tight.
Party Skirt for clubbing, what do you think?

Have you noticed that the clothes look better on models than alone?
(and better on models than on me >P)

Monday, May 24

I like how if I party on Friday I get to recover on Saturday and then there's still a day left before we're back to routine!

Letting my hair naturally dry, pulling on my most loose and relaxed jeans, and throwing on a leather jacket because all I'm doing is buying a new cable (the puppy bit through mine) for my netbook and grabbing some Korean food = <3. Oh and this LV bag has been my "go to" handbag for a few weeks now.
Oh and massage chairs! <3<3
So after Friday we've been enjoying a quiet weekend. I added some "cages" in my closet (required some rebuilding), did some laundry, reorganized my handbags (more on that later), changed my sheets, and I plan on doing my nails before sleeping. :) Overall a good weekend ^^
...As long as I don't remember all the novels to be read and essays to be written. Ugh.

Moderate Spending - The Green Scarf Epidemic

If you have been following this blog you'll notice that I try to post everyday. However, I do not post hauls often (despite the fact that I do shop a lot), and I do not buy the latest fad (especially in terms of make up and cosmetics), nor do I focus too much on what "new" just came out. Although I could spin a few ideological reasons for this, the single truth is that I do not want to encourage myself to spend more money.

I have been thinking about writing a post on the prerequisites to being a fashion/beauty blogger, or even a "fashionista", but having read the the latest Green Scarf story on Independent Fashion Bloggers I feel that there is a need to make my own confession (albeit a vague one). My confession is that since March (2010) I have been trying to limit my shopping. I have done this by...
  • refusing to swipe my credit card anymore, which I managed to do for more than a month (I caved in this month, not happy with myself).
  • I have also been to the mall only to accompany other people in their shopping pursuits, which means...
  • I browse but have learned to walk out the door without some sale item in my hand.
  • I don't visit Marshalls/TJ Maxx weekly anymore (except to accompany yobo who enjoys buying his sporty stuff there i.e. soccer ball).
  • I try to only buy on Ebay when I have money in my Paypal account (from selling)
  • I tell myself that I don't deserve another purchase (which unfortunately means I can swipe for other people, like yobo, or most recently my mother-in-law's gifts) aka I don't need retail therapy
  • I unsubscribed from all amazing deals/stores like Gilt (I had maybe 5 different memberships before).
The fact of the matter is that I am a college student, I am underpaid in my current position (think Starbucks barista - paycheck), I have not found a real job yet, and yes I am married but I don't know why everyone (including my boss) thinks this means I have more disposable income.  I don't, because we pool our resources (for the most part) and when we first got married I felt my baggage get lighter and imagined I had more disposable income, until I realized that I don't just shop for myself and my family anymore, I shop for him and his relatives as well.  It's not the same as being single but it's not better either.  What I do is, I read "frugality" blogs and "getting rich" blogs on a daily basis. Sometimes I read MSN Money articles too, and today I'm reading Investopedia articles.  I read these so often and try to implement stuff that works in my own life that I feel this is something I should share in my blog as well.  I may not be qualified to lecture on money management, but I would like to share my progress.  After all, this is why I'm trying to shop my closet in the first place.

Please let me know if you share my dilemma, if you would be interested in something related to the finance of fashion, or even personal budgeting tips (or links to them!). It would be wonderful to know that I'm not just writing to a wall here, or worse, an uninterested audience.

Getting to Know Your Wardrobe

Before moving I had set up a goal for myself, which was to list every piece of clothing I own.  I got this idea from my high school best friend, who used to write lists of everything she owned and everything she didn't own but needed (the so-called "gaps" in one's closet).  I'm also a list-whore, it's just been daunting to try listing my own clothing arsenal so reducing the amount of clothes I own should make this an easier task, and eventually will make the goal of shopping my closet easier as well.  My eventual goal is to have pieces that match with numerous other pieces, AND that everything is flattering. I don't want so-so pieces in my closet, I want fabulous pieces in my closet.

I think I may extend this to shoes and jewelry. I've been trying to get rid of some shoes too (sold one pair of golden pumps a few weeks ago!).
So my question is, how many pieces of each clothing do you think is the norm? How many pairs of pants, jeans, khakis should one own? How bout skirts? Dresses? Tops? T-shirts? Long-sleeves? Sweaters? Cardigans?

...See what I mean? Isn't this tough? How much is too much?

Announcements:
- I'll be posting a series examining my wardrobe with the goal of attacking on genre per week!
- First round of PIF will end Memorial Day weekend, at which point I will be donating a bag to Goodwill (as they so kindly confirmed that I can). Those of you who have emailed me regarding additional info: bare with me!
- I've updated the "just me" page with my current skincare routine (so it turns out pale face = Pond's whitening cream, not entirely due to illness as I'm fine now and yobo pointed out that I'm so "white")

Mario Badescu Skincare Review

I think I mentioned a while back that I received this set after seeing Jenny review it on her blog ("The Skinnies").  After the last review I needed to take a break and sink back to my old stuff so I actually used this set when we first moved and I couldn't find all my cosmetics.  Some of these I'm still using, like the mask, but I think I've had them in use long enough to do a review.
I thought it was cute that they had instructions on how to use their products XD

Enzyme Cleansing Gel - This ran out in like three days because yobo used it too. He said it's very good by which he means that he feels "clean" afterwards (this is prerequisite for cleansers, that he feels squeaky clean and non-oily afterward). I think it was good because it wasn't too "strong" but I wasn't too fond of the air freshner scent.

Special Cucumber Lotion - I love this. I think I may buy this next (when I finally run out of toner, that is) as even though I didn't use a cotton piece with it (first I couldn't find them, and then I realized that yobo used them up while I was wondering) I felt really refreshed. It's a similar feeling to the Cucumber toner by Kiehls--except maybe better? I've used up a few bottles of the one by Kiehls and it doesn't compare to this tiny bottle of yellow stuff! It's alcohol-free too :D

Hyarulonic Eye Cream - Not sure what to say about this, not finished with it yet and even though I've pushed it for yobo to use he can't say he feels any different with it. I think it's quite average...

Cucumber Tonic Mask - This was not bad.  I don't usually feel much with cucumber masks (in general) but I do realize that they're supposed to be hydrating and refreshing. Not sure if this is either so I wouldn't recommend it.

Collagen Moisturizer (SPF 15) - I had yobo try this for me since I didn't want to use anything with "collagen". He said the sample was too small for him to tell the difference. I sneaked some on me once but it wasn't extraordinary so I can't say either.

Kiwi Face Scrub - I still have this left, so I'm still using it as my "light" scrub (I alternate between "heavy" scrubs and "light" scrubs so that each gets used only once a week).  It's quite mild, a little goes a long way, and it doesn't hurt much. I do feel "cleaner" than if I had just used face wash so it does work, I think maybe I just prefer having more "seeds" to scrub my face.

So overall I recommend the toner & the gel cleanser! To get your own sample, head over to Mario Badescu's Website and complete their skin survey. You'll then receive an email asking you if you want to try their samples (mine went into SPAM so you might want to check your spam folder). They also have this brand in stores like Nordstrom so maybe I'll head over there for their acne scar stuff (samples!).

An Education (movie)

An Education (2009) is a movie I had planned on watching for a while but never got around to it, mostly because I think yobo wouldn't be able to sit through it and my usual moods demand comedy or extreme soap-opera style drama. It's rare that I'm in a mood for these types of "artsy" films, what with moral messages and artistic scenery. I'm quite proud of myself :D My classes this quarter are doing wonders to me.
Basically it's set in the 1960s, and I was more entranced with the wardrobes and Paris than in the lead male character. Where previously I had grudgingly told yobo that actors are the worst people because they're good at convincing themselves that fiction is reality (and if you believe it's real then it's no longer a lie and it's undetectable), but in watching this movie I discovered that really good sales people are really scary.  So now I feel a little better about yobo.
So in a 16-17 year old's ordinary wardrobe there were lots of grandfather cardigans and...plaid.
I think her coat is cute, I'm sure it wouldn't look as good buttoned up (unless belted?) but I don't think I could resist not buttoning a coat outdoors...Patent leather <3 Looks like my grandmother's purses!
Even her school uniform is great! The leather messenger style book bag, the high waisted skirt and the blazer jacket! All in gray too :D
I noticed that many of the dress patterns (her mother wears a similar one) look like curtain patterns, or sofa patterns--you know what I mean. Those Renaissance style patterns in gold and other dramatic colors copied from France. I don't think I want to compare with a curtain.
Cropped pants and simple flats! I'm not a big fan of the necklines of the time but that's easily solved ;P Slouchy cardigans also don't suit me at all so that's out of the question (I think in terms of what I want sometimes).
Waist hugging dresses were all over as well, but how do you feel about over the knee dresses/skirts?
Simple outfit of the educated woman (you know, the feminist who doesn't need to wear skirts everyday).
I like how even though Jenny is the conservative dresser she still manages to have a leopard clutch.
Overall I thought it a worthwhile picture, a 4/5 because of it's moral message and excellent acting.

You are shaped by your environment---by choice?!

I was talking with my old roommate recently (who lives in another state) and she told me she got a new job, but that there is a dress code and thus she had to spend hundreds of dollars on a new work-appropriate wardrobe. My coworker, who has a second job said a similar thing when she first got it, saying that you can't just dress casually (as we do in the office), but that if you want to look professional and mature (as we do in our age, apparently) we have to dress the role.  If anything, we all know that first impression is everything, and even if we would rather not, we judge people by how they look.

It's a topic I've had in the back of my mind for a while now, but I do wonder: how does your job/environment affect how you dress?  I posted an outfit post from last Friday wherein I wore a black cardigan--well the truth is I wanted to wear a black blazer, but I changed my mind last minute because I don't want to out-dress my boss.  The last thing I want to do is dress more professional than my boss (the client's would wonder), and in fact one of the first career advice given is copy your environment, follow your boss, because being copied is usually flattering.  Strangely, I have always felt the opposite.

I feel that copying in fashion is like copying in art, you do it for practice, you do it so that you can implement them to your own style and transform whatever it is you copied to look like "you". Blatant copying of an outfit, a style, etc. such as in buying the exact same piece from the exact same chain (store/brand) is just wrong (in my opinion).  It's one thing to buy the same piece and style it differently, it's another to buy the same piece because you like the way it was styled and want to copy it. Of course, this is just my narrow-minded opinion, and in the end I do think that doing it while searching for your own style is fine (as long as effort to find that style is recognizable).

....Back on topic, I of course don't copy my boss' style, but it's important to recognize that she only wears suits when she goes to court, and normally she wears trends and boots and blouses and jewelry.  So I don't get to wear my blazers in the office, I rarely wear heels (I'm already taller than her so what's the point?), and I don't even wear make up most of the time and I don't feel bad because it doesn't seem like she does either.  In another words, I feel like I can be lazy to a certain extent. As long as I avoid t-shirts and jeans she does not seem dissatisfied with my dressing.

On the other hand, I feel that because of where I work, I would not wear a beach/summer outfit to work (i.e. shorts, a tank top, a mini skirt without leggings), because if I were a client I would wonder about a place where the employee dresses like she's going straight to the beach afterward.  I feel the need to dress a certain way, but there is a glass ceiling that I just described, but actually only recently have become conscious of, and yet there is also a minimum requirement that has never been explicitly stated in the office.  So what am I supposed to wear?

On another note, I noticed that while the receptionist indulged in the secretary look all winter she has begun to wear floral skirts and no stockings as of late, and I wonder if she tired of her wardrobe or if she was given an "ok" to dress unprofessionally (the other receptionist, male by the way, was fired for not looking professional).

While looking for pictures to insert into this post, I found AcademiChic run by three women with PHDs "on a crusade against the ill-fitting polyester suit of academic yore". How very interesting!

How are you shaped by your environment? I mentioned in previous posts that since moving to California (from Finland) I have worn less collar shirts/vests/dress pants/heels & more jeans/skirts/tanks/sandals. Yet I know many people who come from Europe and refuse to wear flip flops, or distressed jeans, and essentially refuse to assimilate into their environment.  Sometimes this can cost you your job, sometimes it means you are regarded as omega, so refusing to blend in with your peers comes with a cost.

Tom Ford's interpretation of A Single Man (movie)

I mentioned previously that I would read the novel and that I'm watching the movie: A Single Man (2009). It took me two days to finish it and I can't say I paid too much attention to all the silent action in the first half as I was sort of cleaning while watching (the solution to all multi-taskers who can't focus on one task: watch something while doing chores like folding laundry). The movie was not bad, it was well-directed, based on a good novel (by Christopher Isherwood), excellent actors (Colin Firth <3), only I think a lot of the novel doesn't translate well on screen. Mostly because the novel is written in first and third person, where there's a sense of isolation of the "character" or "role" that we play in our day to day lives (i.e. at work) and the "person" (who I am). So in the novel there's a clear distinction in voice between George the original, and George the character and that's what makes is so interesting. The movie has that, but it seems more normal in the movie, like he's just another person who refers to himself in the third person ("Angela did this. Angela's sad!").

I do pay attention to men's fashion as well, but as you're not that interested (based on the lack of feedback I've received on the issue whenever brought up) I'm only going to mention Charlotte's "look" in the movie (played by Julianne Moore):

Her make up was stunning! And she did spend quite some time on just this one eye so no wonder and now I'm thinking, can I replicate this? Should I?

I loved her dress! And I'm sorry I couldn't get a better shot of it, but it was just so elegant and flattering (only if it weren't so "airy" she would've looked thinner, if it had been more figure hugging).

Overall I'd say this movie is worth watching, but I would rate it 3/5 because the story was a little tedious and the messages aren't as clear as in the novel.  Someone who hasn't sat through a lit class but has seen the movie should let me know their thoughts :D!
