How to Clean and Care for a Vintage Leather Purse

A while back I mentioned that I purchased something great from Ebay, as every now and then I start hunting for vintage leather purses. I'm so stingy that I refuse to pay more than $40.00 for one (I might make an exception for Gucci...but more on that when I can afford it) so I was ecstatic when I found one within my budget by Bally. Normally I search for Coach or D&B when it comes to leather, but I think my vintage Coach phase might be leaving me already...I found this one by accident while looking for a "chain purse"!

Original:

Step 1:
Surface wife purse with damp cloth.
(Saddle Soap, about $7 at a local Ralphs, which means if you aren't lazy like me you can probably find it cheaper)
Use soft damp cloth (or brush) and froth Saddle soap on it before applying it to leather.
Rub and buff.
I just cut up a piece of cloth for this purpose, you probably don't want to use anything too nice because it's possible that the purse has a lot of dirt or color on it i.e. if someone tried to polish it in the past it would have color polish on it. My cloth was 1/3 black by the time I was done cleaning.

Result after Cleaning:
You'll notice that some of the scratches actually became more obvious after cleaning, this is because the soap is white and there may still be some residue left on the leather at this point (I'm a beginner at this~).

Step 2:
Oil the purse by rubbing oil to the leather with a clean soft cloth or brush. Normally "mink oil" is recommended for this purpose, but I've heard of people using even olive oil without any problems. If your purse is very expensive, I would go to the pet store and ask for mink oil. I have already tested out Johnson's Johnson's baby oil on a purse in this post so I am not at all worried about using it on my new purse!

Final Results:
Shiny and pretty right? Now you'll notice that the little scuff marks don't go anywhere but that's why there's actually a third step, which is polishing and buffing! I haven't bought the materials for this yet (can I use shoe polish?!) as I've hesitated so many times in the store and the leather polish I bought on Ebay never arrived (ugh. moving is so irritating), but once I do you can expect a post with results!

P.S. I did not edit these photos for light or color, only resizing and cropping so pictures are with flash in the afternoon light and should be accurate.

But I want it! Korean style Tote Bag

I got myself addicted to the Korean drama: Shining Inheritance (I think a drama is good if I either laugh a lot or cry a lot, this would be a teary drama) and seeing them carry all these expensive purses doesn't make me want to go and buy Coach (as the characters do in the drama), but makes me lust for something like this:

When I grow up I want to be a Treasure Hunter...Purses!

I once read in a magazine that Treasure Hunters are people who roam vintage shops looking for "treasures". I like this idea, only I'm not a fan of musky vintage shops so I prefer hunting in discount stores like TJMaxx or Marshalls. My friends are always surprised when I suggest that if they want to buy a YSL bag or Coach shoes they should check out TJMaxx because oddly they don't think high end brands can be purchased anywhere but in department stores, boutiques, and outlets.  I tried selling some of the things I buy, but so far I've only sold a few and I might have to rethink this. My mom said that if I sold its in Finland it would be worthwhile, and I think that certain brands are quite wanted in Asia as well, just the person I entrusted my things to be sold didn't have enough credit to their account on Chinese Ebay (taobao.com.cn).

Anyhow, so my dream side job would prolly be owning a boutique and letting someone else run it while I go treasure hunting! Either that or being some kind of stylist's buyer so I can just hunt and send real time pictures while they OK they buy. Then I'd get to spend someone else's money! Even better!

The thing is that most of the time I don't even want these things for myself. If I really want it, I think it's so "me" and I'll never find another one like it; then I buy it. Not buying it has cost me insomnia so I've learned my lessons.

OMG I loved this bag! I saw it last week and would've dyed for it because I loved the color of the leather, the zippers and studs...It was $150+ (can't remember >>) and so I figure that first of all the only way I can wear studs reasonably is without black (too cool) and second of all; would I wear studs after the fad is over? No. And there it stayed for some Korean lady to oogle at T-T
I tried this Gucci on because...well...it's Gucci and it looked really cool what with the chains and all (sort of what I've been looking for). However it was again one of those "cool" bags (not to mention pricey).
You know I almost regret not buying the black leather drawstring bag...It was soooo nice and yet sooo expensive that I couldn't convince myself to splurge. I think it's a Jimmy Choo?
Left: $450 Right: $250
This Fendi purse is the blandest shape, and I've seen one of our countryside Profs sporting a similar clutch but as you can see that doesn't change the price tag by much!
This Betsey Johnson was a winner! But I don't believe in sequins, I think they fall off and I hate sewing so sewing them back on like my mom used to do for me is out of the question. Missing sequins? Ew.
The Guess was $60, Lesportsac was $40 but the other is all watercolor and I could only carry it in an airport (maybe) or while camping, and I'm just not a Guess girl. I even tried it on in front of the mirror and...no. I thought about buying it so my sis could sell it in Finland but...no trip planned in the near future. And honestly Guess is often on the shelves so it's not like it was a steal. The $20 yellow purse I have at home, now THAT was a steal! XD

Something I was looking at for yobo but we agreed that white is not as good as the black one he had (someone stole it at the gym).
Finally this is a purse I'm considering  buying...not for its brand or for it's style but just because I think it's cute. It comes in white and brown too! I have ordered a few similar purses from Hong Kong which are made from similar material (PU leather?) so I'll wait and see how those turn out.

I apologize for the poor quality of pictures, I actually left out a few purses because you couldn't really see them (most expensive one was $1499!) and I wonder if you even want to read about my finds? Though I must admit that I love taking those pictures with my cellphone so maybe I will aim at taking better pictures or using flash so that I can continue posting such posts. Next post will include clothes I've scouted out (less picture-heavy) and then finally I'll have a post with all the shoes I'm coveting!

What are Signature Bags?

One of the things I've been looking for is a website with a listing of all purses ever made by a certain brand, unfortunately my friend informed me yesterday that the only way to get something like that is to purchase one in Japanese. Which is not bad, because I've seen an LV collection book on Ebay for about $30.00 (also LV Bible and 09-10 collection), but I'm not in a place where I would like to collect such objects (I'm moving across seas!) so I would prefer is someone would just scan them all online. I would appreciate it if you could send me a link if you find one!

The reason I need this is to figure out what kind of vintage purse I want, to determine whether it is fake, and also to use as reference when purchasing new (a lot of fakes here! even in department stores!). I recommend you to do the same! Only I'm not just interested in LV, I want Fendi, Gucci, Chanel, YSL, Miu Miu, etc.

I mention this because I was reminded when I saw that Los Angeles Times has released "50 Signature Bags" and I wanted to show you which ones I like.

6. Prada - Pizzo S Satchel (I don't know how practical this one is...)

14. Marni - Balloon Bag (cute for everyday use)

19. Gucci - Boston Bag (I prefer the original tan too)

29. Marc Jacobs - Stam Bag (I have issues with the quality of Marc Jacobs...)

34. Chanel - Quilted 2.55 Bag (Can you say expensive?)

36. Zac Posen - Alexia Bag (I like this grandma style :D)

38. Halson - Foxy Envelope Clutch (I can imagine this going with a dress or a suit!)

43. Givenchy - Nightingale Bag (So many fakes out there!)

50. Louis Vuitton - Monogram Speedy (if I had to choose, I'd pick Gucci's Boston Bag over this one)

What do you think of my choices? What do you like? What do you wish were on the list?

But I want it! Black leather bag!

YSL "inspired" black leather purse is up at $65.00 or so on Ebay at the moment and I lost interest once it hit $50. If you scroll all the way down it actually reads "faux leather" (le gasp!) and I promised myself I would only buy real leather from now on (invest invest!). After all, it's a hard economy and we have to be diligent about where we invest money, no?

It's not like I can just stop spending, after all ;P

And if this pair of Guccis were in my size I can't guarantee I wouldn't pull out that credit card I've been hiding away...

Moschino is really what I'll have to shop when I get a real office position...$30

But I want it! Studded quilted bag!

Renata Studded Quilted Bag in Beige $56.00

This is the deal: I want it, but I don't want fake leather. I want this in REAL LEATHER. Find me one & I will buy it :3

But I want it!

I don't follow the release of luxury products, not because I don't like them, but for the simple reason that I'll feel bad when I realize how much I want something but cannot afford it. This is the same reason I pass by all the D&G, Prada, and YSL stores at the outlet (yobu, however, always manages to drag me in so that he can browse). I know that if I'm ever going to purchase a YSL purse it's going to be at TJMaxx or something so why bother checking out stores I can't  afford? I also don't like the way sales people in these high end stores (I'm referring to outlets for the actual stores have better trained sales people) treat me, or just look at me; they either dismiss me as non-important or they watch me like a hawk just incase if I do something wrong. I usually walk out feeling violated.

Today I was browsing Ebay and I discovered this beauty:
It's up for sale for $500 or best offer and I'm droooooling *-*

Any other takers? Or what are you lusting for?
